Facilitation

Working with communities and teams

Our facilitation approach creates energy, ownership and brings people together to work collaboratively.

Using an independent facilitator streamlines engagement processes and increases productivity by building trust and having an expert guide the process. We will design a process based on your objectives so that every meeting has a clear purpose and desired outcomes.

We have extensive experience in sensitive situations where community outrage and emotion is present. In these situations, having an independent, neutral facilitator is a powerful tool to create a safe space, enable everyone to contribute, keep people focussed on the outcomes, mediate difficult conversations, diffuse emotions and create agreement on future outcomes.

We design and facilitate community forums, workshops, advisory groups, group processes and consultations.

We create and run team planning days to improve strategy and implementation. We aim to make these days enjoyable, help participants to think creatively and spark new insights, while following a disciplined process that will guide the team to share information and plan effectively, building ownership and commitment to shared and individual goals.

Regional roadshow around water-sharing

In 2019, Mendleson facilitated a roadshow around metropolitan and regional Victoria, consulting with a range of community and industry stakeholders around current and future water-sharing arrangements. Although a highly emotive area, the consultations provided a safe, calm space where all views were welcome and heard, and people could have high quality conversations with a range of relevant people from DELWP and local water organisations.

Odour at Merricks Estuary

The organisations worked in partnership to reduce the long-standing issue of unpleasant odour at Merricks Creek, which had prompted many complaints and concerns from the community.

We recruited a working group of community representatives and facilitated a deliberative process where the community members briefed a coastal engineer and decided on an option to trial to reduce odour at Merricks Estuary. Community complaints about the odour have significantly reduced.

Banyule Flood Forum

We facilitated a forum to provide information to residents who were concerned about flooding in their area. The forum provided information as well as direct contact with representatives from the local council, SES and Melbourne Water. Although only around 30 attendees were expected, over 130 people came. Good planning and facilitation, and great teamwork on the day from all parties ensured that all were able to speak to a relevant person to discuss their concerns.
